Canada to invest up to C$80 million in Ford facilities
Thursday, September 04, 2008
Reuters Canada -- TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada will offer Ford Canada up to C$80 million ($75 million) over five years to help build facilities that could "create or sustain" some 750 jobs in Windsor, Ontario, Industry Minister Jim Prentice said on Wednesday.

The funding will help Ford carry through plans to reconfigure its Essex engine plant in Windsor into a new flexible engine assembly plant.

The factory currently assembles V8 engines for pickup trucks and SUVs -- vehicles facing slumping sales as North American consumers shift to smaller, more fuel efficient cars because of higher gasoline prices.

At least Ford is trying to keep these jobs, unlike GM who have killed 5 plants that made pickups and Suburbans. Are they even serious about staying in the game anymore? Wagoner's already made his tens of millions. What the hell does he care?

For the "Big Three" (Ford, GM, Chrysler) this is way too little and way too late...

These bozos have fought the fuel efficiency guidelines and rather than build more efficient cars, they built biger and heavier models that they could either exempt from regulation or that skirted the limits...

NO tears for the "Big Three" who have been out-engineered, out-marketed, and out-sold by Toyota, Honda, and the others...

The info in the last paragraph is wrong. The Essex engine plant builds V6 motors, Ensite builds the V8s, and has since the 1930s.

It doesn't make sense to keep a plant open which is producing V8 engines. There is still no market for the output.

They are also suppose to do R&D into alternatives, which I would love to see more of, but it looks like they will also be looking at hybreds which still burn gasoline. We need none fossile fuel alternatives. And if they are going to keep fossil fuel alternatives and need the power a Gas V8 produces, why not do a Hybred diesel. It should tripple the milage of a regular gas V8.

Their first step should have been to get rid of the union. With their artificially negotiating for more and more each year, without regard to consumer demand for the product, they have eliminated jobs in Detroit. Now, with Canada taking taxpayer dollars to "subsidize" the unions, they are only perpetuating the problem.

Will be interesting to see if they will continually fund the unions as they demand more and more....just to line the union bosses' pockets.

What the heck. The US Gov bailed out Chrysler for much the same reason (the bailout would be cheaper than unemployment for all of the workers). It's socialistic, but cheaper than the alternative.
