2 to 4 minutes. At todays gas prices it would not be smart to continue to idle, plus its good to cut down on the pollution.

On a normal day I would shut the engine off if I expected to be at idle for:
Longer than 5 minutes

If I know I have to wait I shut it off. If I am already waiting after a few minutes I turn it off.

that's what curbs and sidewalks are for in small towns-the cops are all busy with tied up traffic! No wait at all

I generally shut my engine off immediately after parking, if I plan to sit for more than 3-4 minutes.

My Prius shuts off automatically and starts back with battery power. I think that certainly aids in fuel economy. I'm afraid to shut off my Buick for fear it may not start...

Maybe if I am at a very long train but there isn't any of that nearby so I haven't shut off my car in years.

my diesel needs to cool a little if I have been running on, but otherwise I would shut down if I thought it was going to be >1 minute.
