Transport Canada grilled by MPs over Toyota recall

CBC News -- Members of Parliament grilled Transport Canada officials Thursday about what they knew about safety problems with Toyota vehicles — and when they knew it.
-----
But many MPs were not satisfied with the responses, saying they want to put the spotlight on Toyota officials themselves next week.
-----
Transport Canada has received 17 complaints about Toyota cars involving a number of issues over the past three years.
-----
The transport committee meeting was told Transport Canada had received a total of 17 complaints about Toyota cars involving a number of issues in the past three years, but none involving sticky pedals until Toyota informed the department it had received five.

same answer to every topic today; eh? SAFE TOYOTA/LEXUS should be towed to an impound yard until this is resolved.

Interesting that Transport Canada needs to depend on Toyota for "reliable" information.

Transport Canada has received 17 complaints about Toyota cars involving a number of issues over the past three years.

They fail to say 17 out of how many cars. 17 is a low figure if Toyota has 500 thousand cars on the road. Every car manufacturing company has recalls.. I think this thing with Toyota has been blow completely out of proportion by the Media. I have never owned any vehicle other than U.S. manufactured..

PS: Easy for Toyota to say "there has as yet been no confirmed cases...in Canada", since they fail to notify authorities of cases & refuse to use/deny access to tools/info. in order to investigate causes of incidents. I have read of at least 3-5 incidences that fit this, are unexplained & Toyota has not or refused to help investigate. So this quote is legally truthful but morally might come back to haunt Toyota.

The real question is " which is cheaper for Toyota fixing the cars or paying off the politicians?"

You only get away with misconduct for only so long. In the end you will get your "just" reward.

It is marginally satisfying that the NHTSA was not the only government watchdog a sleep at the switch!

All the politicians want is to distance themselves from their safety depts, the safety dept wants to point fingers elsewhere & Toyota just wishes to cover the whole thing up like they tried to do...but can't now.
It's funny how Toyota managed to close group investigations & then hire people from the NHTSA, or above not report complaints they had (but its up to owners to also report it-if still alive, if co. not handling it).
As to mysub, its Toyota's job to fix it & everybody else's to complain. The safety org.s might have had a handle on the issue sooner if Toyota had not refused to be open about incidents...ie. secrecy around EDR data read-out that was next to impossible to get from them until now.

What's sad from above, of the 17 complaints...one is of a young man killed under dubious circumstances almost 3 yrs ago & family/lawyers had to fight till now before Toyota would unload the 'black box' info. This is to happen soon because of all the recalls & attention & I hope it puts some blame on them after treating the case with such distain. Just for those not in the know, just about all other mfgrs have open software so that law enforcement etc. can easily get data(at sight in many cases) to help with investigation.

OriginalBudman, look up the Ford Pinto, and I think you'll rescind your statement. They likely know all about it, but its alway a calculation of if the lawsuit costs outweigh the recall costs (including negative publicity and sales effect). But, just as in the pinto case, the recall would have been much cheaper early
